James The First Reigns In Germany

Well done James Kingston, who seems to get better the older he gets.

While many golfers find controlling their nerves more difficult the longer they have been on the road, James seems to have his well protected as he proved in Germany last week.

But what made James’ success in the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Cologne more amazing was that it came on the back of four missed cuts in a row.  He hadn’t won a penny since The Open in July but made full amends when beating Dane Anders Hansen at the first extra hole.

James also set another record by, at 43, becoming the oldest winner on the European Tour this season.  I’m sure there are plenty more where Sunday’s win came from.

It was no shock that Simon Dyson finished high up the order again because he has been in a rich vein of form of late while it was even less of a surprise that Lee Westwood finished in the top 10 – he rarely finishes out of it.   Chris Wood, Darren Clarke and Jeev Milkha Singh completed our quintet of top 20 finishers.

Congratulations also to Ernie Els, who came under considerable pressure in Chicago to hold on to his ranking in the FedEx Cup play-offs, but actually improved it to ensure he would be in the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week.

Finally, as has been the case quite a lot recently, let me turn to Andrew Flintoff, still a headline grabber despite having retired from Test cricketer.  The latest reason Fred is in the news follows his decision not to accept an incremental contract from the ECB.  That does not mean he has turned his back on England at all because he still very much wants to play the limited form of the game for his country.

But Fred feels he knows his body best and wants the opportunity to play when and where he wants rather than be told by somebody else. Makes sense to me and, by all accounts, to the Professional Cricketers’ Association.
