Quality Qualifiers On US Open Quest

Quality Qualifiers On US Open Quest

Simon Dyson and Dave Horsey certainly know the secret to 36-hole qualifying events and proved it once again this week at Walton Heath.

I don't know whether it's a personal mindset or a fitness advantage, but they will be competing at Bethpage in June when the US Open bandwagon rolls into Long Island thanks to their heroics at qualifying.

Both these young men are at such a stage in their development that another major and the experience that goes with it are exactly what they need right now.

They weren't exactly anonymous either at Wentworth last week with Dave being right in the mix for a couple of days and Simon finishing 16th.   They both have the game that suits a US Open so they'll be looking for a strong week at the year's second grand slam event.

There was a very encouraging trend at Wentworth with plenty of our younger players showing excellent form.   Rory McIlroy was right up there closely followed by South Africans Charl Schwartzel and Thomas Aiken.

Another strong field is assembled this week next door to Brands Hatch although I still can't work it out why they call the course London Club when it's nowhere near the capital.   Sergio Garcia is making a very welcome start while our own Chris Wood and Branden Grace are taking advantage of their enhanced status after the re-rank to claim places.

Watch out for Shiv Kapur too, who made his biggest cheque of the season at Wentworth and should suit the London Club even if the temperature might test his durability.

Finally a little word for Anton Haig, who was also back in the money at Wentworth after three very good rounds.  He seems to be much more settled now and I can see him forcing his way back up the world rankings again.
