Thanks My Old China

Posted: 1st May 2008

Hi everyone and many thanks for the countless number of messages, texts and emails congratulating me on my success last weekend in China.  You can imagine just how I felt when that last birdie putt dropped. I'd like to start this week's diary with a personal message to all my sponsors and fans to say a big thank you for your continued support.

Without the backing of Barclays Capital, Audemars Piguet, Setanta, Oceanico, Taylormade, Stuburt and Dunlop Collection plus all my other supporters including my website followers, my comeback win in Shanghai would not have been possible.

Of all my career victories, my win at the BMW Asian Open was at the very top. It was always going to be difficult for me to get back into the winners' enclosure after what our family has been through, but this is a big mental hurdle I have jumped.

I have been working harder than ever on all aspects of my game, putting in nine, ten and even eleven hour days. I think there is a lot of good golf in me yet and as frustrating as it has been at times, it is nice to see the work paying off. Hopefully I will put myself in a position to challenge for tournaments a lot more frequently in the future.

I have also been labouring away on my fitness with Rob Watts to help me feel ready for the busy months ahead. I have done an awful lot of work with TaylorMade and their new golf ball, the TP Red, trying to control the spin and that has been a huge improvement and move in the right direction. I'm pleased that my sponsors' patience in me has paid off.

I've also been playing well with my new caddie in Phil Morbey, universally known throughout the world of golf as Wobbly. He is definitely one of the world's best, having made his name at the US Masters alongside Ian Woosnam and I'm looking forward to building on this successful partnership.

It's been a very difficult year for me, but I'm confident now that things are starting to look up both personally and professionally. I am feeling happier now and starting to smile on the golf course again. My boys are doing great at home too and they are happy for me to get out there playing.

I'm back in action this week at the Open de Espana in Spain, and I hope to continue this form in the build up to the Ryder Cup. I have given myself a bit of a boost but there is a still a long way to go to qualify for the team. There is nothing that helps your confidence like winning, whatever way you do it, and it feels very good. My focus is to keep playing as good a golf as I can and I do desperately want to be at Valhalla so watch this space.

Once again, many thanks for your support and I hope I can continue to re-pay it in the way both you and I would want.
