Brighter Light At End Of Tunnel

Posted: 5th August 2008

Something interesting and quite exciting to report at last after a fairly frustrating and uneventful few weeks.

It was disappointing to be away in America when Tyrone celebrated his birthday but he was back in Ireland and apparently had a good time.

But at last something positive seems to be coming out of all the hard work I have been doing with my golf game.  My play at Firestone in the Bridgestone WGC - particularly the 65-67 weekend - event has really encouraged me for the rest of the season and couldn't have come at a better time with the Ryder Cup qualifying process soon to end.

I played lovely all week and really, really well on Sunday without being able to buy a putt for the last eight holes when I was quite close to the leaders but not quite close enough. I kept giving myself chance after chance after chance. I kept hitting it reasonably close and hit really good putts but they just didn't go in. I played well all week, 3-over par after the first ten holes on the first day wasn't the greatest start, but I'm pretty pleased I battled on and got myself back in there again.

I've missed this sort of event all year, the majors and these World Golf Championships event. It's been great back playing them again and I felt very comfortable last week   This is where I want to play, this is what I want to do. I want to get more opportunities to play like I have done this week.

Now we're in Detroit preparing for the season's last Major and my first and I'm really looking forward to it after all the good memories I have of Oakland Hills and the Ryder Cup there four years ago.  They've put in some new tees to fox us a little, but it'll be fun.

It's also anther good chance to continue my climb up the world rankings as well as impressing Nick Faldo.

I need to show excellent form because I've got four tournaments left and I need to play well in those. If I do, he may consider me for a pick, and if I don't, I'll be watching it on TV like everybody else. I'm just trying to play as well as I can and we'll see what happens.
