Boy Oh Boy - Simply Fantastic
Posted: 25th August 2008
What a special week in Holland... and having Tyrone and Conor come on to the green after my win in the KLM Open made it all the more memorable.
The boys came with Alice, who with husband Eddie does such a great job looking after them, me and the house in Surrey. It made for a very relaxing time and the benefits were seen all week and particularly in the result.
A special mention too for my caddie, Wobbly. His support was invaluable. Our partnership is getting better and better and he is definitely getting to understand me a lot better - not the easiest of tasks, I will admit. It takes time to find out when to say things and when not and Wobbly is mastering the art.
I've certainly made a few more friends and pleased a few old ones because I know of several people who took advantage of the 40-1 odds being offered before the tournament started. Doubt that you'll get that value on me at Gleneagles this week, but I'll be trying just as hard.
Summing up last week, it always feels good to play well when you really have to and winning by four shots demonstrated just how well I played against a strong field.
I was obviously going to be asked about the Ryder Cup and all I can say is that it's up to Nick and who he sees fit to help the team. I needed to play well to make him have a look at me regarding a pick and hopefully I can go to Gleneagles and play well there as well.
The Ryder Cup is huge thing for everyone: for us as players, for the Tour and for journalists to write and report on, but I have other things that I want to do. I want to move up the World Rankings and the Order of Merit and because I want to be sitting down having my Christmas lunch knowing that I am in all the big tournaments again next year.
I was asked if Henrik Stenson's fast start had frightened me to which my response was: 'I am 40 years old, six feet two inches and a little bit overweight so not much frightens me'. But Henrik is a great player and he was always going to come at me at some stage, but I also knew it was not a sprint. I knew that I was going to have some chances because I was feeling so good swinging the club and a closing 66 was testimony to that.
I'm not sure where I rate the win, but playing well when you have to is a very good feeling and I had to play well this week. Otherwise I wouldn't have put myself in consideration for The Ryder Cup.
I was also asked if it would be a crushing blow not to be selected and I assured them that it would not. It's the Captain's prerogative - that's why he is the Captain. It's his call and if he thinks there are other guys more deserving of a pick then I have no problem with that whatsoever.
Now I'm already at Gleneagles practising for this week's tournament and hopefully there will be more of the same.
Finally a big thank you to all my sponsors for having faith in me and to all the people who have sent messages of support and congratulation. Your backing and help means a great deal to me.
