Down But Not Out
Posted: 3rd September 2008
What can I say? Not a lot really other than that I was obviously disappointed when Nick Faldo rang me up on Sunday afternoon to tell me that I had not made the plane for Valhalla and the Ryder Cup.
People have been trying to get me to slag off the captain, but that's not my style. I have to respect his decision and will do... and I'll be supporting the team from wherever I am at the time.
I have no qualms about his picks either because both Paul Casey and Ian Poulter are above me in the world rankings so they will definitely strengthen the team. But I will say that I think I could have benefitted the team also both on and off the course.
And if anybody thinks that this is the end of me for the Ryder Cup then they don't know Darren Clarke. Nobody will be trying harder than me to make it into the team for Wales in two years' time.
So that's it other than to say, I'm not sure what else I could have done to get into the team and I'm delighted that my two wins this season have got me to just outside the world's top 50. I intend to be inside that figure come Christmas and sitting down to my Xmas lunch knowing that I'm playing in all the main events next year.
I've plenty to look forward to and be confident about and I can assure you there are no sour grapes on my part. I've coped with far worse than not getting on a golf team.
Finally, I'd like to wish Nick and his team all the very best for Valhalla.
