A Great Invitation

I was long gone from Turnberry and driving home when Tom Watson nearly won the Open Championship at the age of 59. What a story that would have been, but Stewart Cink spoiled that particular fairy tale and every congratulation to him.
I listened to it all on the radio and was torn between Lee Westwood and the five-time champion: Lee because he is a good friend and Tom because of what he would have achieved. It was not to be and I felt for both of them.
The following day I was in Epsom at the RAC Club for a company day with Tesco, who made a very generous contribution of £100,000 to the breast cancer side of my Foundation.
Then it was home to pack the bags and head for Abaco with my boys Tyrone and Conor. It was our first real holiday together in two years having spent most of the previous 12 months trying to get into the Ryder Cup team. It was great to get away with them and we had a whale of a time. Actually it was more of a bonefish time because a very game seven-pounder of that species found its way on to my hook.
We also played quite a bit of golf and it was great to spend so much time with them. Tyrone turned 11 on Monday – another example of just how quickly time passes. I told my manager Chubby not to get in touch unless it was an emergency so I was able to switch off completely and relax in what is a wonderful destination. Unfortunately my waistline took a bit of a pounding so it’s back to the gym now for a couple of months to get back in shape.
After the Bahamas it was off to Nantucket for a children’s charity day and then to New York for a company day with Barclays. I was in a very good mood and it got even better when I checked my emails to find a message from Sarah in the ISM office to say that I had received an invitation to play in the US PGA, the season’s final grand slam event. Happy days.
First I’m in Akron for the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club, scene of one of the best wins of my career. It’s a great course and just as good is Ken Stewart’s restaurant, a favourite feeding station of mine at this particular stop on my itinerary.
I’m hoping that memories of my success here might kick start a successful last part of the season. I haven’t played that badly all year and very happy with my play from tee to green so if I can get a few putts to drop the scores will start coming. I couldn’t be more relaxed and refreshed so here’s hoping for a memorable two weeks.
